Reptiles and Terrariums

Reptiles are also a very special and fascinating group of animals. Whether they are spiders, geckos, bearded dragons, snakes or chameleons, they are all brilliant animals to observe.

Depending on the species, they are usually kept in dry desert terrariums, humid or tropical terrariums, or in paludariums.

Leopard Gecko Terrarium

This is my leopard gecko desert terrarium. It is 1.20 m long and I built and fitted it out myself. It is made of OSB boards and insulation covered with a mixture of sand and clay. This gives it a natural, stunning, desert-like look.

The geckos also have three levels, providing more space to roam and climb. The terrarium contains a UVA heat lamp and a UVB lamp, as well as standard LED GU10 bulbs.

Rainforest Chameleon Terrarium

I also built my 2-metre-high rainforest terrarium from OSB boards with cork insulation. The cork provides climbing surfaces, good insulation, retains moisture and looks great.

For lighting and heating, I’ve installed a UVA heat lamp, a UVB lamp, a ceramic heat lamp and additional LED GU10 bulbs. It also has an automatic misting system.

Bearded Dragon Desert Terrarium

The bearded dragon desert terrarium is my largest terrarium, measuring 2 metres in length. I’ve built it into the living room cupboard. It’s insulated and, just like my leopard gecko terrarium, has been decorated with a mixture of sand and clay.

It has two large ramps leading up to the upper level. This provides more space for the bearded dragon to roam and makes the terrarium much more interesting. Here, too, I have fitted a UVA heat lamp, a UVB lamp, a ceramic heat lamp and several LED GU10 bulbs.
